Everyone Can Work! Customized Employment:
The Florida Center for Inclusive Communities (FCIC) is providing leadership in a variety of local and national research, training, and program development efforts. The following staff leaders provide contributions to the field of employment: Tammy Smith, Lisa Friedman-Chaves, and Brenda Clark.
FCIC offers a large array of training and technical assistance in order to build capacity around effective transition and customized employment within the state. The projects described below work directly with job seekers, families, community rehabilitation providers, school districts, and state agencies involved in employment for people with disabilities. The FCIC employment projects have strong collaborations with both the Florida Department of Education/Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and the Agency for Persons with Disabilities.
Supported, Competitive, Integrated Employment Training Project (SCIETT), which is funded by the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council, Inc. and the Florida Department of Education/Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services, provides intensive training and technical assistance for Community–Based Leadership Teams in order to enhance employment supports for individuals with disabilities through the implementation of research based effective practices. The project currently supports six teams, which are located in Escambia, Bay, Osceola, Brevard, Palm Beach, and Broward counties. The project collaborates with Griffin-Hammis & Associates, LLC and TRN, Inc. in the delivery of the training and technical assistance. Start-Up Florida, which is funded by the US Department of Labor/Office of Disability and Employment Policy, is a collaborative grant with the Agency for Workforce Innovation and the Agency for Persons with Disabilities. The project focuses self-employment supports for adults and youth with disabilities. This is accomplished through the implementation and evaluation of the Micro-Enterprise Training and Technical Assistance Project, as well as two additional self-employment training resources available in Florida, and the cross-training within the Florida Workforce System. The project collaborates with Griffin-Hammis & Associates, LLC in the implementation of the training and technical assistance. Florida is one of three states to receive this grant award from the US Department of Labor/Office of Disability and Employment Policy. The other two states are Alaska and New York. Additionally, Virginia Commonwealth University and Griffin-Hammis & Associates, LLC were collaboratively awarded the national piece of this grant, which is called Start-Up National. Partners In Transition Training and Technical Assistance Project, which is funded by the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council, Inc., is focused on the coordination and provision of training and technical assistance for school district-based leadership teams. The project coordinates and/or provides training and technical assistance based on individual team needs as they relate to the implementation of research-based effective practices in the areas of schooling, career preparation and work-based learning, youth leadership and development, family involvement and connecting activities. The project currently supports thirty-five counties throughout the state and collaborates with the Institute for Educational Leadership, the National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability for Youth, Griffin-Hammis & Associates, LLC and the Panhandle Business Leadership Network in the implementation of training and technical assistance. http://www.partnersintransition.org
Student’s Website on Employment & Transition, which is funded by the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council, Inc., focuses on the development and updating of an interactive website addressing customized employment and effective transition issues for students, families, school personnel and the adult service system. The project collaborates with TRN, Inc. and TransCen, Inc. in the development and monitoring of the website.
